What is BioPortal?
BioPortal is a collection of patients information and biological samples that will help us to understand the causes and consequences of diabetes. Allowing researchers to explore the interplay between genetics, environment, and lifestyle.
Who can become a patient in the BioPortal?
People over the age of 18.
Individuals with any type of diabetes.
Canadian citizen, permanent resident or landed immigrant.
We encourage those from diverse ethnic backgrounds to consider participating. Currently 95% of biobanked samples worldwide are from patients of white-european ancestry. This is makes it harder to develop treatments and properly care for patients from other backgrounds.
What does participating involve?
We will ask questions about your health. The questions will take about 15-20 minutes.
Then, we will coordinate the collection of samples for the biobank.
Later we may call you for further follow-up.
You are free to withdraw at any time, for any reason. Your decision will not affect the quality of care and services you are entitled to.
All of your information will be de-identified and kept strictly confidential.
